Where Do Birds Go When It Snows?

Filed under: Estes Park, Random Thoughts — Jennifer @ 20:59

I’ve aways been fascinated by animals.

One of the first books I remember reading as a child was titled “Where Do Birds Go When it Rains”. I don’t think the book ever answered the title question. What a trauma for a young girl. I remember being so concerned every time it rained (and I grew up in South Florida where you could set your watch by the summer thunder storms) and worrying about the little birds outside.

Being a Colorado girl now I am awed at the adaptability of animals. Forget the rain, I am amazed animals can survive the winter!

Steve and I went on a winter hike in Estes Park this weekend. It was snowing lightly and when we stopped for some hot tea a little bird popped out of the tree right above our heads. Seeing him up there reminded me of this childhood question. Whatever the weather the animals are out there surviving.

Below are the photos of Steve and I with our tea cups and our feathered friend.

Snow Shoeing in Estes

Filed under: Engagement, Estes Park — Jennifer @ 09:24

One thing I love about Colorado is we can wake up to a 50 degree day but drive 20 minutes and be in a winter wonderland. On Sunday it was 50 degrees in Lyons so we went up to Estes Park to snow shoe with our friends Jennifer and Ryan.  I took some photos of their impromptu snow ball fight and snow angel design. We had a great time.

Flight for Life

Steve, Sparky and I went for a short hike down to the St Vrain last weekend and noticed a helicopter circling over head. Soon the bird began to come down and we were witnessing a flight for life operation in the Lyons High School parking lot. Since Lyons is the double gateway to the Rockies we often worry about car and bike accidents on 36 or 7 but this rescue was for a Pinewood Springs resident. I don’t know the details but we snapped a couple pictures of the helicopter leaving.

New Year, Old Earth

Filed under: Green Goals, Retail Therapy, Random Thoughts — Jennifer @ 10:55

Welcome 2008!  The beginning of the year is always my favorite time to reflect, review and revitalize.  What went well in 2007, what didn’t go well.  What do I want to change in 2008.

One of my intentions for 2008 is to implement some green policies for the business.  Below is the list of some of the things I am doing or about to start.

  • Archival products.  I love that my products – photographs and albums – are items that you will cherish for generations.  I search for the highest quality items so that your grandchildren will enjoy the image we create today.
  • Online Proof Viewing – no disposable prints
  • Work with Album companies that have green goals and animal friendly covers.
  • Use Rechargeable Batteries
  • Green Printing for my business cards and marketing materials.  I am using recycled papers and soy inks and a company committed to eco friendly practices.
  • Green Printing option for your cards and announcements.

I have always had the ideal that every little bit helps.  These intentions may seem small but if everyone did just a little bit the old earth will be a little bit happier.

Please share more ideas for going green in the comment section.

 Cheers to the new year!

Cyclocross - unexpected diversion

One of our favorite things to do when there is enough snow on the ground is to grab the xcountry skis and head out the front door. Steve and I were making our way to Bohn Park when we were stopped by a yellow caution tape??? Ignoring the tape we just ski on through. Within a minute we turned around to see hundreds of bikes riding through the snow straight toward us. What the heck was going on? Turns out CycloCross was in Lyons and we were in the middle of the course for the State Championships. No worries, we were well out of the way of the race course.  What a fun and unexpected diversion. We only packed the point and shot camera but we still managed to get some cool shots. What an awesome little town we live in.

Here are some sneak peek pics of Baby Grace. I’ll have to find a new name for her as she isn’t really a baby anymore - she is turning into a beautiful little girl.  Enjoy the pictures!

Small Town Christmas

Filed under: Lyons, Random Thoughts — Jennifer @ 15:46

I love living in a small town.  This past weekend was the Lyons Annual Christmas parade and fireworks show.  I must say I am impressed with the show each year.  First there is a light parade through town followed by a melodious choir singing carols and the show wraps up with a grand fireworks display.  It was chilly out but the warmth of my neighbors made the temperature bearable.  Below are some photos.  I was using my new D300 and these were all taken sans flash at ISO 3200

Owen & Quincy

Filed under: Pets, Babies — Jennifer @ 12:17

Wow, I’ve been fighting a cold for 3 weeks now but am finally feeling better.  I guess it’s that time of year.  I am so excited.  I got a chance to photograph Owen and Quincy yesterday with my new camera.  I ordered a new Nikon D300 and it arrived this week on my birthday - what a perfect gift!  I am adding children and pets to my portfolio and spent the morning with my neighbor here in Lyons.  It was fun hanging out and watching Owen play with Quincy.  I got some really cute pictures.  Below are my favorite photos from the day.  I’ll be adding more to the website later this week.

Cards Cards Cards

Filed under: Retail Therapy — Jennifer @ 13:47

I just finished my family holiday cards and decided to work on some cards today. I found some great templates. We can change the colors, words and fonts. These will work great for any occasion - the holidays, save the dates, thank yous. It can be a folded card or a flat postcard too. Below are a few samples. I’m really excited about the designs.
